5 Reasons Why Winter Is the BEST Time to Treat Your Varicose Veins

December 8, 2025

If you live in Bradenton, Sarasota, Sun City or anywhere along the Gulf Coast, you already know that “winter” here isn’t exactly snow-boots-and-hot-cocoa weather. But even our mild Florida winters (think 60-75 °F) bring the perfect window to finally say goodbye to painful, bulging varicose veins.

1. Cooler Days = More Comfortable Recovery

Modern varicose vein treatments like endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), VenaSeal™ closure, and sclerotherapy are minimally invasive—most patients walk out the same day and return to normal activities in 24-48 hours. Still, the first week or two, you may feel mild soreness or tightness.

In July and August, that soreness feels worse when it’s 92 °F with 90 % humidity. In January a light breeze and low humidity make everything feel easier. You’ll actually enjoy your post-procedure walks around town.

2. You Can Hide Compression Stockings (No One Will Ever Know!)

After most vein procedures, we recommend medical-grade compression stockings for 1–2 weeks to speed healing and get the best cosmetic result.

In summer, those stockings feel very uncomfortable. In winter, they disappear under jeans, leggings, or maxi dresses. Many of our patients schedule treatment right before the holidays so they’re fully healed (and stocking-free) by the time spring break and boat season arrive in March.

Florida sun can be brutal year-round, but in winter we actually spend more time indoors or in the shade. That’s great news for your legs!

Direct UV rays right after sclerotherapy or laser treatment can cause temporary brown staining along treated veins. Staying out of intense sun for the first couple of weeks dramatically reduces that risk—and winter makes it effortless.

4. Use Your 2025 Insurance Benefits & FSA Dollars Before They Expire

Most health insurance plans (including Medicare and many commercial carriers) cover varicose vein treatment when it’s medically necessary—think aching, swelling, restless legs, or skin changes.

If you’ve already met your deductible this year, your procedure could cost you little or nothing out-of-pocket. Plus, flexible spending account (FSA) dollars usually expire December 31. Thousands of dollars are literally sitting there waiting to be used on healthier, pain-free legs.

5. Be Ready to Show Off Your Legs by Spring

The full cosmetic improvement—faded veins, smoother skin, no more bulging ropes—keeps getting better for 3–6 months after treatment. Get treated in December or January, and by the time you’re pulling out shorts for the Bradenton Area River Regatta in February or heading to Siesta Key for spring break, your legs will look and feel better than they have in years!
