Soaring Through Summer Safely✈️

Avoiding DVT During Your Travels

Summer is here, and with it comes the irresistible urge to explore new horizons! Whether you're planning a relaxing beach getaway, an adventurous mountain trek, or visiting loved ones across the country, air travel is often the quickest route to your destination. However, as you’re booking your flights from Bradenton or Sun City, there's a silent risk that many travelers overlook: Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).

At Florida Vein Center, with convenient locations in Bradenton and Sun City, we want you to enjoy your summer travels without any unexpected complications. We understand that prolonged sitting, especially on long flights, can significantly impact blood flow in your legs, increasing the risk of DVT. That’s why we’ve put together some essential tips and tricks to help you avoid this “mid-air madness” and arrive at your destination feeling refreshed and healthy.

Deep Vein Thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms in one or more of the deep veins in your body, usually in your legs. While DVT can happen to anyone, certain factors associated with air travel can increase your risk:

Prolonged Immobility: Sitting for extended periods with limited leg movement allows blood to pool in the veins of your lower legs.

Low Cabin Pressure: The reduced air pressure in an airplane cabin can slightly dehydrate you and potentially make your blood thicker.

Dehydration: Not drinking enough water during your flight further contributes to thicker blood.

While DVT itself can be serious, the most dangerous complication is when a part of the blood clot breaks off and travels to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism (PE), a potentially life-threatening condition.

Take Control of Your In-Flight Health: Tips to Avoid DVT

The good news is that there are several simple yet effective steps you can take to minimize your risk of DVT during air travel:

1. Stay Hydrated: Your In-Flight Essential

Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your flight. Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol, as they can contribute to dehydration. Pack an empty water bottle to refill after security!

2. Move It, Move It! Regular Leg Exercises

Ankle Pumps: While seated, repeatedly flex and extend your ankles, pointing your toes up towards your shins and then down towards the floor. Do this frequently throughout the flight.

Calf Raises: Gently lift your heels off the floor while keeping your toes planted, then lower them back down.

Foot Circles: Rotate your feet at the ankles in both clockwise and counter-clockwise directions.

Stand Up and Stretch: If it’s safe to do so and the seatbelt sign is off, get up and walk around the cabin every hour or so. Even a short stroll to the restroom can make a difference. If you're unable to get up, perform seated stretches in your seat.

3. Dress Comfortably: Circulation-Friendly Clothing

Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing that doesn't restrict blood flow. Avoid tight pants or socks with tight elastic bands.

4. Consider Compression Stockings:

For individuals at higher risk of DVT (e.g., those with a history of blood clots, varicose veins, pregnancy, obesity, or recent surgery), wearing compression stockings can significantly improve blood circulation in the legs. Talk to your doctor at Florida Vein Center in Bradenton or Sun City to see if compression stockings are right for you.

5. Be Mindful of Your Seating:

If possible, choose an aisle seat to give you more freedom to stand up and move around without disturbing fellow passengers.

While these tips can significantly reduce your risk, it’s crucial to be aware of the symptoms of DVT. These can include: Pain, swelling, tenderness, or redness in one leg.

If you experience any of these symptoms during or after your flight, seek medical attention immediately.
